My Wretched Home

Author’s note: This poem is perhaps just a frustrated rant, but nevertheless is in keeping with the spirit of ‘writing on a whim.’

I would like to add however, that if you read this and think,”that’s one strange family” I’ll say you are really blessed and to never take your loved ones for granted.

What do you do

If your home is a wreck?

A mangled mess of broken people

Who break each other still?

What do you do

If your bastion is a far cry from a happy family?

Instead each day is unhappily spent

In ugly clashes of ego and pride.

What do you do

If the only things you learnt from family

Are to blame others for your losses

And to never accept your faults.

What do you do

If your family sets an example of cruelty?

Teaching to forgive but not forget

To hound each other over past errors.

What do you do

If at the end of the day

You don’t want to go back home

For fear of mudslinging within?

What do you do

If you have a loved one

But dread taking them to your hell-hole

Might turn them ugly too.

What do you do

If the bonds of family have you chained

To people you would never be with otherwise?

What do you do?
